Earwig Academic

Earwig is a software package for special schools designed to make managing;

  • teaching evidence
  • pupil assessment
  • progress tracking
  • reporting and analytics
  • parent engagement

… easy and professional for special needs teachers  -  and effective for pupils with SEND.

It has been the most successful package for schools in England for seven years and is now able to offer the same advantages to special schools and SEND implants which operate the Statutory Curriculum for Wales.

Llywodraeth Cymru prescribe descriptions of learning for each Progression Step 1–5 for mainstream learners. But these are also applicable to many learners with ALN, especially when used with the revised ABC Steps for literacy and numeracy ('LNF') and digital competency ('DCF') and the modified Routes for Learning ('RfL') route map for those with more complex learning needs.

In Earwig you can assess against as many frameworks as you like as well as creating individualised EHCP based frameworks for each pupil.

1. WALES: RfL

The four purposes should be the starting point and aspiration for Welsh schools' curriculum design. Ultimately, the aim of a school’s curriculum is to support its learners to become:

  • ambitious, capable learners, ready to learn throughout their lives;
  • enterprising, creative contributors, ready to play a full part in life and work;
  • ethical, informed citizens of Wales and the world; and
  • healthy, confident individuals, ready to lead fulfilling lives as valued members of society.

  1. WALES: RfL

The Routes for Learning route map supports practitioners in Wales to assess learners with profound and multiple learning difficulties (PMLD) and young learners with severe learning difficulties (SLD).

  1. WALES: Literacy & Numeracy (LNF)

Literacy and numeracy are mandatory cross-curricular skills within Curriculum for Wales. It will be the responsibility of all practitioners, across all curriculum areas, to develop and ensure progression in these skills. To support schools and practitioners in providing opportunities to develop, extend and apply these skills, the LNF has been updated and continues to be available as non-statutory supporting guidance.

  1. WALES: Digital Competence (DCF)

Digital competence is a mandatory cross-curricular skill within Curriculum for Wales. It will be the responsibility of all practitioners, across all curriculum areas, to develop and ensure progression in these skills. To support schools and practitioners in providing opportunities to develop, extend and apply these skills, the DCF has been updated and continues to be available as non-statutory supporting guidance.

  1. WALES: Core

Learner progression along a continuum of learning from ages 3 to 16 is central to Curriculum for Wales. Assessment plays a fundamental role in enabling each individual learner to make progress at an appropriate pace, ensuring they are supported and challenged accordingly.

This framework presents the progressions steps for each of the core areas of learning:

·         Languages, Literacy & Communication;

·         Mathematics & Numeracy; and

·         Science & Technology.

  1. WALES: Foundation

As with the core framework, the foundation package presents Curriculum for Wales progressions steps for each of the foundation areas of learning:

·         Expressive Arts;

·         Health & Well-Being; and

·         Humanities.
