Earwig Academic was the first edtech software company to provide schools with an app to fully digitise SEN assessment, tracking, reporting and link it to teaching evidence. We now plan to harness the power of AI to help teachers to take the SEN teaching and learning process to another level and create an indispensable tool for teachers.
How this new power is harnessed in schools must be determined, not by techies, but by teachers. So small steps and consultation with our clients and individual users, as well as edtech AI specialists, is the way forward.
As a first step in this direction, we are holding a short conference to look at what is possible now and what will be possible soon and to see what school leaders have to say about how they think this can benefit teachers and pupils. We will also look at the attendant dangers and pitfalls which accompany any step forward like this.
We first broached the idea of a small AI discussion for SEN school leaders with Earwig client schools in August and had an immediate and considerable positive response. So we have expanded the scope of the conference to include other school leaders, moved it to the Science Museum and asked Professor Rose Luckin to grace the occasion with a keynote speech.
The room has a maximum capacity of 70 and we already have more than 40 places taken. So book early to avoid disappointment.

Professor Rose Luckin
Rosemary (Rose) Luckin is a Professor at University College London. She has also founded EDUCATE Ventures Research Ltd., a London hub for educational technology startups, researchers, and educators engaged in evidence-based EdTech and leveraging data and AI to benefit education.
She is renowned for her research into the design and evaluation of educational technology and AI and was named as one of the 20 Most Influential People in Education in the Seldon List in 2017, the only non-US winner of the ISTE Impact Award, and one of Computer Weekly’s top 50 most influential women in technology for 2023. She regularly provides expert evidence to policymakers like the UK Parliament's House of Lords and House of Commons select committees and the European Commission.
Rose has published widely in academic journals, conferences, books, and media. Her 2018 book, Machine Learning and Human Intelligence: The Future of Education for the 21st Century, has been translated into Mandarin and influenced many of China's leading AI companies. Her most recent book, AI for School Teachers (2022), is an essential and accessible guide to AI for anyone in education.
